Rediscovery of Self

The Weight Watchers approach is built on the standard that weight loss can only be accomplished and sustained with a practical revamping in our daily living that includes attention to behavior, food, activity, and having a supportive environment.

Twelve months ago I started the revamping of my lifestyle knowing that I needed to lose a minimum of 40-50 lbs. in order to be healthy and stay relatively active on into my old age.  As of this date I have lost 37.5 lbs. and want to shout from the rooftops just how wonderful it feels to be well on my way in this journey.

Everyone that attempts to lose weight has their own private issues and stumbling-blocks that can put obstacles in their path.  My own include the fact that I love to eat things that like cheesy potatoes, fruit pies, potato salad, brownies, mashed potatoes, and on and on.(Are you seeing the pattern here?)

This is a very common problem with most of us that have to watch what we put on our forks.  Changing how we think about food, shopping for food, preparing the food and making menu choices, is the single biggest hurdle to maneuver.  I have always had a great interest in herbs and spices so rethinking my approach to food has been kind of fun and I have found that I prefer Indian flavors to Mexican flavors and Asian seasonings to Italian.  I still enjoy them all, but I have found some new favorites.

The whole food challenge is magnified by the fact that my dear husbands health is failing and he must be on a high calorie diet in order to try to maintain or gain weight.
As a consequence I must shop for selections that fill Don's needs as well as mine, which means we have a container of skim milk and a container of 2% milk; we have a loaf of Pepperidge Farm light style whole wheat bread and we have a loaf of bakery fresh english muffin bread and so on.  Don eats 2 or 3 whole eggs and I eat egg whites.  It definitely adds to the challenge and keeps me busy which plays into the "activity" portion of the Weight Watchers standard.

I will expound on the behavior, activity and support issues of the WW standard later as each is equally important to the whole.  As I continue in my lifetime rediscovery it is giving me a sense of independence I've never realized before these small accomplishments.  Being obese is a prison with shackles that I know I will never enter again.
