We are just about in the middle of winter and this has been an extra fascinating one. I found the following in a monthly periodical and wanted to pass on the tidbits that may help all of us with our cars in winter.
>Keep your headlights clear with car wax. Ordinary car wax contains water repellents that will prevent that wintry mix of slush, snow, and road salt from accumulating on your headlights. Just wipe it on. The protection will last for weeks.
>Ice-proof your windows with vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water and spritz it on all your car windows at night. In the morning, they'll be clear of ice. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water, preventing it from freezing. If you wake up to an already frozen car, spray the mixture on your windows and watch the ice melt.
>Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray. Spritz cooking spray on the rubber seals around car doors and rub it in with a paper towel. The oils in cooking spray prevent water from melting into the rubber.
>Squeak-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol. Wipe you windshield wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia. These solvents can cut the buildup of grease and grime, the main culprits that prevent wipers from working properly.
>De-ice your lock with hand sanitizer. Can't get your key in the lock on a frozen morning? Just pour some hand sanitizer gel on the key and the lock. It contains alcohol, the main ingredient in most commercial de-icers.
>Get unstuck with a floor mat. If you get stuck on ice, just turn off the car and place a floor mat, rubber side up, under the spinning tire. Turn the car back on, put your foot on the gas, and you'll have the grip you need to get going.
I certainly hope these will help if and when the info is needed. They make sense although I haven't had to use any of the tips yet. Small spritz bottles can be bought at most merchandise stores like KMart, Target, etc. Also bottles of sanitizer. Put the 3 or 4 items in a small box or can in the trunk, under a seat, in the garage, wherever you may need them. Most ladies have hand sanitizer in their bags nowdays anyway.
Let's not let winter get the best of us, and, as long as we can see the sun now-and-then, we can enjoy the special beauty of winter. Take a ride outside of town or to a park and take notice of how the bare tree branches grow on individual species of trees. Notice which deciduous trees have leaves through the winter, or hold onto some sort of nut/berry through winter. Watch how moist cold air seems to freeze in mid-air and give the air a crystallized aura; I believe that's called a hoarfrost, also.
I wonder what all this moisture will produce when Spring arrives...
