Olathe Cancer Resource Center

Today was one of my volunteer days and I always spend some of my time, at the Resource Center, reading some of the new mags or bulletins pertaining to patient resources, treatments, support agencies, etc. When a cancer survivor, or family member, comes in for assistance/information they are seldom comfortable until they have visited us several times.

As a cancer survivor, I have always found it difficult to talk to strangers about my own journey but I find it easy to listen to the concerns and dreams of other survivors. Our center is manned by volunteers that are survivors. For those of you not familiar with the cancer journey, all cancer patients are classified as survivors the minute they are diagnosed.

I have a new favorite quote:
"No one knows the story of tomorrow's dawn." Ashanti Proverb

This is a piece of wisdom for us all, but especially for those facing critical, frightening rungs of a deadly ladder. Tomorrow...how many? how hard? how often?
Then the questions come regarding the dawn...bright? gray? dark? happy? peaceful?
Support groups help to answer some of these questions and help to ask them. The resource center at Olathe Medical Center makes that special effort to reach each survivor and help with their questions. I am so happy to be a part of that outreach.
Tomorrow's dawn...hmmm...
